The First Lesson
a mystical short story
Dong~~~ the dawn bell rings. The stars are on their way out, and the sun is beginning its work of pushing the night out of the sky. All the warriors, scribes, and masters of the mountain monastery gently rise to start their day. Well, everyone except for two initiates.
Knock, knock. No response. Knock knock knock. No response. KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNO-- "ARGH! We're getting up!!" screams a young, burgundy-haired girl to her tormentor. A young boy groans like 1000 year old rusted metal door. ‘Why did we come here??’ they wonder..
A gray-haired, black robed man patiently waits and dances outside of the door. He smiles and hums to himself as he listens to the shuffling of clothes, the stuffing of feet in shoes, the huffing and puffing of groggy children. He laughs, fully immersed in the moment's joy.
The door of the initiates’ dormitory creaks open as two children, in pink robes rush into the hallway. The elder laughs at their pace and frustrated auras. “Stop laughing at us! We’re up, damn man!” The fierce, blond-haired boy fumes and swears, secretly annoyed with himself.
“Sorry for making you wait, Grandmaster Logos.” The quiet, but equally fierce young girl bows deeply before the elder.
Logos laughs. “Shakti. John. You’re right on time.” He laughs and shakes them both with one arm each. “Let’s go.” Logos leads the way out of the dormitories, to begin the day's journey. The two initiates follow the master, reflecting on his non-reaction to their antics.
After a quick stop to the monastery’s kitchen, to fill the parties’ bellies with rice, vegetables, mushrooms, and fresh squeezed juice (“with love” adds the head chef with a wink, with all the energy and affection of a matriarch), the three set out to the mountain's summit.
Shakti walks with all the presence she can bring. Trying to feel her feet connect with the dirt road. Taking in the smell of the air. John explores and observes, stopping to admire nearby birds and lizards scurrying about with their own agenda. Dashing to catch up.
Logos whistles and struts, hums and dances along the path with the familiarity of an old, cherished lover. The sun takes its time rising, as its light slowly begins to reach the traveling pod. It’s peeking the crown of its head over the mountain range, in no rush, same as Logos.
The party keeps walking. Absolutely nothing eventful happen. The group just walks and takes in their surroundings. Goats. Hearty mountain plants. Various critters and creatures flap and crawl and forage. John slips, falls, laughs it off, and gets back up. Logos and Shakti laugh.
The group is nearing the summit of the trail now. The sun’s doing it’s best to catch up with them so they can rendevous at the top right as it shows it’s face over the range.
As the sun rises, so does the energy of the children. Inspired and energized, the two slowly walk faster and faster, letting on nothing, until the two simultaneously break into a sprint. Their competitive spirit finally overwhelming the vibe of the moment.
Logos grins, amused and warmed by the vitality of the kids. Vitality that will serve them well in the years to come of intense physical, mental, emotional, and psionic training. He lets the kids get some distance. He closes his eyes, merges with the moment...
The kids are nearing the summit marker, the Sun is almost in position. Logos leaps and rides unseen waves, dancing and flipping through space, landing right on top of the marker, in front of the children.
He grins.
John is pissed. Shakti is blown away. “Damn! I was going to win!” Shakti’s annoyed too. “You wish, John. I had you.” “Get good, losers!” Logos laughs at them again and adopts a legendary hand mudra, the ‘L’ over the forehead, mocking his competition.
Logos laughs again, entirely satisfied with his performance. “Hehehe, come on little weavers. I swear I’ll make it up to you later.” He takes the initiates’ hands. “You better.” John lets go of his anger and lets in awe for their goofy elder. Logos notices, and smiles inside.
They walk to the edge of the summit, and they can see the whole range. It’s truly awesome in every sense of the word. Birds flying together. Goats, deer wandering about. Mountain lions stalking prey. Trees growing in the valley at the base of the range.
“Why are we here, Logos?” asks Shakti, addressing the elder directly. Logos squeezes both their hands. “To teach you the First Lesson that all Weavers must learn, and embody, and merge with.” He stops talking.
“Tell me y’all. Feel into it. Go into your spiritual heart like I showed you. Move your energy into your chest, and expand from there. Tell me, what is the First Lesson?”
They all go quiet. Logos can feel their energy grow and expand. He connects his with theirs, and they expand across the mountain range. The Sun finally exposes its body to their sight over the horizon.
“Oh.” John speaks softly. Shakti starts to weep. John follows immediately after. So does Logos. “Say it.” Logos invites the children, knowing that they Know.
“It’s all Love.” Shakti and John speak in unison. Logos squeezes their hands, and channeling the great strength of the Grandmaster of the Weavers, picks them both up and squeezes them in a tremendous hug. “It is, little weavers. I love y’all.” he says.
“Same!” they both exclaim, to each other and to the elder. They all enjoy each other's energy for a while. “Ok. First one back down the trail gets to play with my sword today.” “YES!” The two initiate weavers dash down the trail, Logos dancing down behind them.
The End.
with Love, Genius, and Wisdom, anansi, the soul director Logos, Shakti, John, and the Weavers will return.
